What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is an identifier for a website that helps users access it. It is the address of a website that people type in a web browser to visit the site. For example, “www.google.com” is a domain name.
Importance of a Domain Name
Every website has an IP address, which is a series of numbers like 192.168.1.1. Remembering these long numbers is difficult, so domain names are used to make accessing websites easier.
Types of Domain Names
Top-Level Domain (TLD):
The TLD is the last part of a domain name, such as “.com”, “.org”, or “.net”.
Examples of common TLDs: “.edu”, “.gov”, “.in”.
TLDs can also indicate the type of website or its country of origin. For example, “.com” is for commercial websites, while “.in” is for websites related to India.
Example of a Domain Name
Suppose you want to visit the website “www.example.com”. In this domain name:
“www” is the subdomain,
“example” is the main domain name,
“.com” is the top-level domain (TLD).
Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD):
These domains are specific to countries or regions. Examples:
- “.in” for India
- “.uk” for the United Kingdom
- “.jp” for Japan
Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD):
These domains indicate the type of use or organization, such as:
- “.edu” for educational institutions
- “.gov” for government organizations
- “.org” for non-profit organizations
Main Components of a Domain Name
Subdomain:
This is the first part of a domain name. Typically, “www” is the subdomain.
Example: In “www.example.com,” “www” is the subdomain.
Subdomains can also be used to divide a website into sections, like “blog.example.com” or “shop.example.com”.
